Call for Web Engineering in Practice Submissions

Following a long tradition at the International Conference on Web Engineering (ICWE), the 16th International Conference on Web Engineering (ICWE 2016) will have an industry track that focuses on the topic of Web Engineering in Practice. The specific topic for the 2016 track is:

Architecture and Engineering Strategies for Large-Scale Web Applications

For many organizations, Web-based applications have become an essential part of their digital infrastructure, connecting them to customers, partners, and employees. The increasing reliance on more and more critical Web-based systems, growing in number, complexity and size, requires appropriate software architecture and engineering practices.

With the growing success of Web technologies and architecture, the challenges are growing as well. When Web principles are used for UIs and APIs, and for communication both as an internal method as well as one with external partners, it becomes increasingly important to have scalable and flexible ways of how this constantly growing and evolving ecosystem is designed and managed.

Topics

The 2016 ICWE "Web Engineering in Practice Track" aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to share their experience, ideas, and approaches to address these challenges of "Architecture and Engineering Strategies for Large-Scale Web Applications". Topics of interest include:

  • Use of microservices and related patterns for Web-based applications
  • Distribution of logic among the Web platform's different technologies
  • Strategies for building modular systems on both server and client side
  • Integration approaches for applications hosted by multiple organizations
  • The co-existence and integration of Web applications targeting the browser with native applications on mobile and desktop platforms
  • Experience gained from evolving large-scale Web-based systems throughout a multi-year life-cycle
  • Managing and documenting complex service infrastructures for internal and external partners

While this is not a formal research track, we are nevertheless interested in submissions and presentations of technical depth, which will allow participants to understand the challenges faced by the presenters, the solutions they picked for tackling them, and the results that were obtained. The overall goal of the "Web Engineering in Practice Track" is to get practitioners together and allow them to share their experiences and lessons learned. In the tradition of scientific contributions, we are equally interested in reports about successful projects, as well as approaches and projects that did not work out as intended.

Focusing on practitioners, the only requirements for consideration in this track is an extended abstract (see submission instructions below). However, we welcome longer contributions as well and will work with presenters if they are interested in publishing short or full papers as part of the track proceedings.

If your work centers on research instead of practice, both in case of ongoing or completed work, you might want to consider the "First International Workshop on Sustainable Web Architectures (SusWeb 2016)" that is part of the ICWE 2016 program. Please keep in mind that the SusWeb 2016 workshop has a different timeline for submissions than the "Web Engineering in Practice Track".

Track Format

After the opening keynote, the track will be structured as 4 blocks of 3 short (20 minutes) presentations, with each block having an additional 20 minutes of discussion with the three speakers and a moderator. Depending on the submissions, our goal is to create blocks that are through-provoking and may present differing opinions on the same topic, allowing attendants to learn about different facets and views of important topics.

Submission Instructions

For the "Web Engineering in Practice Track", we require an extended abstract. This extended abstract consists of a title and a short abstract that will become part of the official program, and an additional position statement (of 2 pages maximum) that outlines the general direction of the talk in more detail.

Submissions and reviewing are supported by the EasyChair system at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=icwe2016

Papers submitted to ICWE 2016 must not be under review elsewhere while under consideration for ICWE 2016, nor may have been already previously published elsewhere.

Track Proceedings

All extended abstracts will be published in the track proceedings. These will be part of the post-conference proceedings. If authors want to publish a more complete paper in addition to their extended abstracts, those papers (up to 16 pages in length) can be included in the post-conference proceedings as well.

Papers to be included in the post-proceedings must be formatted according to the information for Springer LNCS authors at http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html and submitted in PDF. Here are the LaTeX and Word templates. Accepted contributions will be included into the ICWE 2016 Springer LNCS post-proceedings.

Best Presentation Award

The authors of the best presentation in the Web Engineering in Practice track will be invited to submit their story to the IEEE Software Insights department.

Important Dates

  • Submission Deadline for Extended Abstracts: April 1, 2016
  • Notification of Acceptance: May 1, 2016
  • Submission Deadline for Final Version of Extended Abstracts: May 31, 2016
